(a) What are the causes of the conflict between the Sinhalese and Tamils in Sri Lanka?

There are a number of reasons that caused a conflict between the Sinhalese and the Tamils.

The first reason is citizenship rights. It all started when Sri Lanka decided that those who are born in that country or fathers are born there are the only people that were granted citizenship. So those India Tamils all were unhappy as many were brought in to Sri Lanka by the British to work in a tea plantation discovered themselves stateless.

The second reason is due to the jobs in the government service. When Sri Lanka was under the British, English became a common language thus Tamils could enter the government service where they get fat pays whereas the majority of Sinhalese’ English was very poor therefore was a huge disadvantage for them.
So, when Sri Lanka was granted independence, the government to make Sinhala the only language so the Tamils in the government service had to master the language of Sinhala or else they would be dismissed.
So the Tamils of course felt upset to the max, as they could not secure their jobs causing them to conduct peaceful demonstrations but were always disrupted by the faithful supporters of the Official Language Act. Due to this, riots, unsurprisely, occurred and many died painfully.

The third reason for the conflict is university admission. The Sinhalese were not satisfied with that the number of Sinhalese for engineering and medical courses as were not proportionate to the population of Sinhalese in their country. So the educational policy changed, so that the Tamils had to score higher marks than the Sinhalese to get a university admission therefore the Tamils youths had difficulty to get in whereas the Sinhalese could just get it really easily.

The fourth and final reason is the resettlement of population. As we all know there are really poor Tamils and Sinhalese peasants on Sri Lanka and the government transferred those Sinhalese peasants to the Tamil areas which are all heavy populated. And, the government gave land to the poor, landless Sinhalese, ‘forgetting’ about the also poor, landless Tamils.

This stirred tension among the respective races.

This whole question took me about more than an hour!!!the time is inclusive of intensive thinking, anaylazing and visits to othere websites =DD
